For example, if you are having a casual conversation with someone, and they are leaning towards you slightly, and looking at your face, they are interested and engaged in the conversation. However, if you ask a personal matter that this person would rather not speak about, he or she may scratch the back of their neck, bite their lip, or run his or her thumb along their other hand. They might also look down, and their shoulders will hunch forward in a manner that is considered curling into themselves. These signs indicate that the subject is uncomfortable, and possibly off limits at that time. Unless they state they would like to continue, it is best to steer the subject to a safer place until the relationship builds more. If someone feels their privacy is invaded, they will block you out and you will need to redevelop the rapport you had built.
